My favorite artist

My favorite artist

There are several artists that i like, which are mostly painters, because it is actually the area of art i know most. And what attracts me the most in painting, is when it is painted in large formats, when it envelops you, you can watch it in motion and go discovering in its corners more and more elements.

The muralists are the artists who most call my attention and although i have a favorite, i would like to talk about Julio Escámez.

Escamez was a Chilean painter and engraver  of the province of Arauco,  born on November 15th, 1925. His work was very marked by the influence of Mexican artists exponents of Muralism,  which are also subjects of admiration.
He studied arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Concepción, then in Santiago at the University of Chile. He also obtained a scholarship to study the technique of fresco mural painting.

He shares the idea that painting should be something that everyone can see, so his works are on a large scale and mainly in public places. The designs of his murals contain a lot of elements, usually they are like stories, that narrate the history of the peoples, or interpretations and analyses of history. The pictorial language he uses is, so to speak, figurative, but this does not mean that it is necessarily cling to the laws of reality: part of their work is of great expressive level, in which the figures are deformed and exalted, but they are always recognizable figures for the spectator, because they are designed so that the general public -not necessarily within the art world- can understand them.

The latter is what I value most of this artist, and in general of the muralists, the ability to generate grandiose works, visually rich, but they can be appreciated by all. And that, in the rest, they contain messages that are deep and related to the social reality, sometimes of educational character, other times reflective.
Once when i was on vacation in the south with my family, by Chillan and nearby, we turned the television of the lodging and found a channel of the region. In this was giving a documentary on Julio Escamez and since then i have it in the retina, mentioned the murals he had done in Concepción, that by time issues we could not go to see in that opportunity. "The History of Medicine" is in Concepción. I have not been able to see live one of his works, i would love to have some day the opportunity to do it.
